Statement issued by the Syrian community in the Netherlands, regarding the unfortunate event at the memorial.
The Syrian community in the Netherlands has expressed its deep sorrow over the published images showing disrespect to the memorial dedicated in memory of Emma and Jeffrey. Our pain is double and profound : first, the loss of the two children in a horrific accident, and second, the recent offensive actions made by some young Syrian people.
We condemn this act in the strongest terms and emphasize that it was an individual act that does not represent the values of the Syrian community, nor the morals of its members who live respectfully and consciously in the Netherlands, and who sincerely strive to contribute positively to this generous society.
We extend our deepest condolences to the victims' family and express our sincere solidarity with all those affected by this tragedy, believing that the pain of loss transcends languages, borders, and affiliations. We carry within our collective memory much pain and loss, and we fully understand what it means to lose a child. Therefore, our solidarity stems from the authenticity of our shared experience and the depth of our common human feeling.
